Early Beginnings
It all started in the early 18th century, when American merchants buy marine insurance largely from British sources, and frequently purchase it from the agents of Lloyd’s of London. However, insurances bought from foreign sources are a bit expensive and difficult to obtain. So the Americans decided to have their own policies and operated the same principle of Lloyd’s. Soon it hit Boston, Philadelphia, New York and other states.
